Have You Caught the Olympic Bug?
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Is there any chance that you are currently suffering from a case of “Olympic Fever”? Perhaps you began experiencing signs of this illness during last Friday night’s Opening Ceremony? Symptoms may included, but not be limited to:
- Chronic fatigue from staying up for “just one more event” and suddenly realizing it is past midnight?
- Vocal strain from yelling encouragement at the television as if the athletes in Italy can hear you!
- Emotional instability as you find yourself crying tears of joy for athletes you just met five minutes ago?
- Temporary career confusion as you start to think that you could have been an Olympian too if you had only started training at the age of four!
As I tried to wipe away the black circles under my eyes this morning and realized that it was not makeup but a sure sign of sleep deprivation, it became apparent that I had a confirmed case of Olympic Fever!
I find the Winter Olympic sports absolutely thrilling, perhaps due to the speed, precision, and strength that is required in so many of these events. However, what is really captivating my attention, as well as my heart, is the assortment of parent interviews and advertisements.
I am amazed at the hours of training and dedication that begins at such young ages and the support that comes from their parents. One dad built a luge training track on their property for his son to practice at an early age. A mom shared that for years she has been getting up at 4 a.m. every day to take her daughter to the ice rink. Another dad confessed that he would build ski jumps and encourage his daughter to try and beat her distance, and she would work every day until she could. I keep wondering how supportive I would have been if one of my children would have expressed the desire to race on skis down an icy, snow-covered mountain at speeds of 90+ mph. Becoming an Olympic athlete requires significant training, as well as significant parental support if you have aspirations of "going for the gold"!
As parents, we want to do what is best for our children. Earthly opportunities and experiences are wonderful, and can bring great joy, but ultimately, one of the greatest investments you will ever make is in your child's spiritual journey.
With everything that is currently transpiring in our country and world, if there ever was an important time for Christian education, it is now! That is why at St. Matthew Lutheran School, we strongly believe that Christ belongs in school! When you wonder or are asked the question, "Why would you send your child to a Christian school?", you can have the assurance that your child is receiving exceptional academic training, AND you can have that same assurance that your child's spiritual growth will be nurtured on a daily basis as well! You also can be confident that the foundation of all instruction is aligned with pure Biblical truths that are found in Scripture. More importantly, your child will be encouraged to think and participate in ways that will allow him/her to live out and express his/her faith beyond the classroom environment.

For our students, the ultimate "gold medal" is spending eternity with Jesus and taking as many people as possible to join them! If your heart is in alignment with our mission, we would be honored to partner with you again for the 2026/2027 school year!
